Uniquely layered yet separate

There is a different kind of layering that happens in this city. In Milano there are are old buildings and ruins from each time period which has claimed the city as its home and then there is the modern architecture, graffiti, and businesses which are layered on top of that merging together to make something unique. Yet here in Bergamo for the most part the old is kept separate from the new. The old town perched on top of its hill quietly watches the busyness that races below. Bergamo alta is built on top of itself, each building seems to flow into the next, clustered not only together but on top of each other forming a unique layering of houses, shops, and twisting streets. There is no fear of losing yourself here because the old city wall snuggles this town together in such a way that eases you into a comfortable frame of mind.
